Going On a Bear Hunt…
When I started telling different friends and family members that I was planning to go on an archery bear hunt this year, I was surprised by the amount of responses I got that centered around fear instead of excitement. Unphased by the feedback, I continued prepping for the trip and was eager to get into the bear woods.
In early June, I found myself in one of the few states that offers a Spring Bear Hunt. It turned out to be an awesome and thankfully successful adventure and I have some great memories that will last forever.
As I have reflected on my trip, I have realized a primary correlation between going on a bear hunt and construction recruiting. Here it is:
While fear may be a normal human response to change / unknown, it often holds us back from doing things that will provide great memories, learning experiences, etc. If I would have let fear creep into my mind about going on a bear hunt, I would have never gotten to experience watching these incredible animals in their natural habitat or the thrill of harvesting a bear with a bow and arrow. Many times when I speak with candidates about a potential new job opportunity, the thing holding them back is fear of the unknown. The candidate will be able to see that there is so much upside in making a certain move, but will get cold feet and end up staying put at a company they are unhappy / discontent with. In life, most of the time our greatest moments of growth come from us being uncomfortable and taking a risk.
2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love and self-discipline.”
I am not saying that you should jump at every job opportunity that comes your way. It is wise to consider all factors and then make an educated decision that is best for you and your family. However, I think many times we know the right decision is the hard one and we shy away from it for fear of discomfort / the unknown.
My parents have always encouraged me and challenged me with that. Doing the hard thing. I cannot say I have always lived this out perfectly, but I can say that the times I have chosen the hard thing, it has almost always been the right thing and I have not looked back with regret.
Also, an archery bear hunt is an amazing adventure and I highly recommend it…I know I will be doing it again soon.
